Adults’ Hand Surgery

Paul Smith ran the Hand Surgery service at the Regional Centre for Plastic Surgery, Mount Vernon Hospital for over 25 years. This Centre dealt with trauma, ranging from tendon and nerve injuries, skin loss, fractures to more complex digital and hand replantation; the reconstruction of complex hand injuries following rehabilitation. As this was also the Regional Burns Centre, reconstruction of the burned hand was common.

Paul Smith is particularly specialised in the treatment of Dupuytren’s contracture, tendon injuries, nerve injuries and nerve compression syndrome, such as carpal tunnel syndrome and ulnar nerve compressions. He has a special interest in arthritis at the base of the thumb. He is highly adept in surgical procedures such as synovectomy, tendon rebalancing, and joint replacement in both rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis.

  • Acute Inflammatory Disorders and Chronic Inflammatory Disorders – Tennis Elbow, Golfers Elbow, Tenosynovitis
  • Rheumatoid Arthritis, its variants and Osteoarthritis
  • Joint Replacements within the hand, wrist, metacarpophalangeal, proximal interphalangeal and carpometacarpal arthritis of the thumb (CMC joint).
